Lost Trail National Wildlife Refuge and Outlying areas Friday June 12 – Sun June 14, 2020

Join Five Valleys Audubon Society (FVAS) for a two night, three day field trip to Lost Trail National Wildlife Refuge (LTNWR) in North West Montana. In addition to birding Lost Trail NWR on Saturday, June 13, we will bird Friday June 12, on our way to the campground in Marion, MT. On Sunday, June 14th we will bird on our way back to Missoula, stopping at Kila Lake WPA, Smith Lake WPA, and Flathead North Shore WPA. If time permits, we could make other stops along the way home.
Group size: 14 people maximum
Cost: A deposit of $30 is required. Please mail a check to FVAS (PO Box 8425, Missoula, MT 59807) by March 1st, 2020. Please note that we cannot offer refunds, unless there is someone to take your place from a waiting list. First come first serve only. The cost of camping will be determined by the number of people in our group and the number of campsites needed. Camping is $35 per night per site, and there is a $10 FVAS multi-day trip fee.
Carpooling: This is an absolute must, because LTNWR has a limit of five cars for our group at the refuge AND Lions Bitterroot Campground has a limit of two cars per campsite.
Tenters: Bring small back packing tents only. Small, 1-2 person tents, is all the Lions Bitterroot Campground can handle. NO ROOM FOR LARGE FAMILY-SIZED TENTS.
Please let us know if you will be: 1. Sleeping in your vehicle? 2. Pitching a back-packing size, small one or two person tent? 3. Or staying at a hotel in Kalispell? If you stay at a hotel in Kalispell, keep in mind you must be to Marion, Lions Bitterroot Campground by 5:45 a.m. on Saturday June 13th, as we depart for LTNWR at 6:00 a.m. We will be limited to taking five cars to LTNWR. Kalispell is approximately 1 hour away.
Meals: Please bring your own breakfast, lunch and snacks. Dinner on Friday and Saturday will be potluck and something will be assigned to you by June 1st , 2020.
Friday June 12th, 2020: Meet 7:30am on the 93 strip near Old Navy. We will shift gear for carpooling and leave cars in the parking lot that are not going to Lions Bitterroot Campground or LTNWR. We need cars that can hold 3 -4 people each from Lions Bitterroot Campground in Marion to LTNWR. We will bird all day Friday June 12th, on our way to Lions Bitterroot Campground, Marion, MT. Arriving to the campground between 2-6pm.
Saturday June 13th, 2020, Departure to LTNWR: 6:00 am, from Lions Bitterroot Campground in Marion, MT. We are limited to 5 cars in the LTNWR for our group. Carpooling is mandatory from the Lions Bitterroot Campground in Marion, MT. We will join wildlife biologist and manager of LTNWR, Beverly Skinner, at 6:45 a.m., for an all-day private tour of the wetlands, grasslands and forest habitats of the Lost Trail National Wildlife Refuge. We may see nesting Trumpeter Swans and an abundance of shorebirds and waterfowl species associated with Palouse Prairie, riparian/wetland, and larch/pine forest habitats. We may see most if not all, of the warblers associated with this habitat as well. The group will drive and walk along some of the refuge’s closed roads with short hikes on uneven ground for better viewing.
Sunday June 14th, 2020, Departure: 7:00 am from Lions Bitterroot Campground, Marion, MT to Kila Lake WPA, Smith Lake WPA, Flathead North Shore WPA. Other stops may occur, if time permits as we bird our way back to Missoula. The arrival time back to Missoula is open.
