Great Gray Owl at Maclay Flat

Sixteen hardy bird-seekers navigated the icy trails and the trees at Maclay Flat today in wet weather but not the heavy rain and high winds forecast – they arrived about an hour after we were done. The highlight of the trip was a Great Gray Owl that Terry Toppins found for us up against the trunk of a pine deep in the woods – how he found it none of us know, he claims it was pure luck. Ha!

Other cool birds we saw included a Brown Creeper, two Northern Shrikes, Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers, Red-breasted and White-breasted Nuthatches, a Red-tailed Hawk, and a three or four-year-old Bald Eagle (with the Osprey-like eye stripe). A good time was had by all.
